Introduction
The University of Sonora (UNISON) has announced a new initiative designed to strengthen the connection between university knowledge and the needs of local communities.
For the first time in its history, the university has launched the 2026 Call for Community Engagement and Support Projects, an initiative that invites faculty members and students to collaborate on projects that directly address social and community challenges.
Each approved project can receive up to 50,000 pesos in funding, creating new opportunities for students to gain real-world experience while contributing to meaningful improvements in their communities.
A New Opportunity for Social Impact
During the announcement, Rector Dena María Camarena Gómez emphasized that this initiative reflects one of the university’s most important responsibilities: ensuring that academic knowledge benefits society.
Universities traditionally focus on three main areas:
- Teaching
- Research
- Community engagement
This new call for proposals strengthens the third pillar by encouraging projects that connect academic learning with real-world needs.
According to the Rector, the goal is clear:
University knowledge should serve society and help address real social challenges.
Through this program, students and faculty members will be able to design and implement projects that improve quality of life, promote social development, and strengthen the professional and ethical development of students.
Funding and Project Timeline
Each faculty member may submit one proposal per year, which must include the participation of undergraduate students.
Projects can run during one of two cycles in 2026:
January – July 2026
or
August – December 2026
Submission deadlines:
- February 27, 2026
- September 4, 2026
Each selected project may receive up to 50,000 pesos in financial support.
The program prioritizes initiatives that demonstrate:
- Direct community impact
- Social inclusion
- Collaborative teamwork
- Knowledge transfer for public benefit
What Kind of Projects Are Encouraged?
The initiative invites proposals that address real problems in communities.
Possible areas include:
Education
Programs that help students, families, or communities access new knowledge and skills.
Health and Well-being
Projects that promote health awareness, prevention programs, or community support systems.
Environmental Sustainability
Local environmental protection initiatives or sustainability education.
Technology and Digital Skills
Programs that improve access to digital tools and knowledge.
Entrepreneurship and Economic Development
Projects that support local businesses, cooperatives, or community innovation.
Why This Matters for Students
For students, this initiative provides an opportunity to learn beyond the classroom.
Participation in community projects allows students to:
- apply academic knowledge to real problems
- develop teamwork and leadership skills
- gain practical experience
- build professional portfolios
- strengthen connections with communities
As noted by Rocío Sugich Miranda, head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences, many community projects in the past were funded personally by faculty and students.
This new initiative provides much-needed support for these efforts.
Learning Through Community Engagement
María Olga Quintana Zavala, coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Biological and Health Sciences, emphasized that these projects help students develop practical skills while generating real benefits for communities.
Students will have the opportunity to work directly with community partners, applying knowledge in real environments while developing problem-solving abilities and social awareness.
Using Incubator.org to Develop Project Ideas
Members of the Incubator.org community are encouraged to use the platform as a space to explore ideas and collaborate around potential projects.
Participants can use the platform to:
- discuss project ideas
- collaborate with peers and mentors
- document project development
- collect feedback from the community
- share results and lessons learned
This makes the platform an ideal environment for developing ideas before submitting a formal proposal.
